“I don’t want to know.” At one point or another, most of us have had this thought. Alarm bells go off, and we want to run the other way. We’re afraid we won’t like what we find out or that learning the truth will put us in an awkward position.

A basketball coach might conveniently ignore rumors of performance-enhancing drugs when his star player is leading the team to the championship. Or a CEO might not dig deeper into suspect sales numbers because they are boosting the company’s share price.

In this lesson, you’ll learn why we sometimes choose motivated ignorance, why it’s dangerous, and what questions we can ask ourselves to avoid it.
